About Us

Our Goal

The PSK works to ensure physics improves all our daily lives and our future.

Vision

A leading voice in Physics.

Mission

To enhance professionalism and welfare in physics practice for service to humanity.

About Us

The Physics Society of Kenya (PSK) is the learned society of the physics profession and co-operates with national and other international institutions with an active role in promoting, developing and applying physics to the benefit of humanity around the world. We strive to make physics accessible to people from all backgrounds.

History of PSK

Formation of PSK:

  • Formed in 1981 as a professional and learned body, independent of control by governments and with membership drawn from Kenya.
  •

Registration:

  • PSK was registered as a professional/learned and independent body in 1981.

Ideals and Objectives of PSK:

The ideals and objectives of PSK since inception have been:

  1. To represent the diverse interests of all branches of physics.
  2. To promote, encourage and improve the application of physics to technical and other related practices.
  3. To facilitate the exchange of information and ideas on technical and other related matters.
  4. To safe-guard the dignity and integrity of the physics profession and safeguard the standards set to guide the application of physics knowledge to the solution of problems.
  5. To contribute to and set standards for theoretical, practical and management training leading to acceptance to Membership of PSK and registration by the Physics Board of Kenya (PBK)
  6. Commitment to Continuous Professional Development for members of PSK.

What We Do

  1. We work to break down barriers preventing people from underrepresented groups becoming physicists.
  2. We bring physicists in Kenya and around the world together to share knowledge, support each other and build the teams which deliver breakthroughs.
  3. We share those breakthroughs and other research in a wide range of means such as publications (journals), lectures and webinars.
  4. We help turn scientific discoveries into real world applications.
  5. We make sure physicists have a voice in the big debates of our age, about education, science, innovation and wider policy.
  6. We help physicists share the wonder and excitement they feel about their subject with the next generation of potential physicists, from all walks of life.
  7. Disseminate information to members through;
    • Conferences and Seminars for our members to participate.
    • Cocktail lectures, industrial visits, training seminars and information is communicated to members for them to participate.

Why Physics:

Physicists study how the universe behaves and apply that knowledge to improve our lives. They study everything from the smallest particles to the whole universe. As such, physics underpins chemistry, biology, engineering, and many other scientific disciplines.

Thus, the importance of physics include:

  1. Understanding how the universe works gives us tremendous power to change our world.
  2. Many of the biggest changes in our lives have been made possible by physics: mobile phones, the internet, medical imaging devices and electric cars.
  3. Physicists can help us tackle the challenges our world faces, like dealing with climate change and feeding and caring for a growing global population.
  4. More than 3 million people in the Kenya work in industries powered by physics. These include energy, healthcare, telecommunication, manufacturing, transport, aerospace and defense.
